How to Choose Soffits and Fascias

While roofing experts already know the importance of soffits and fascias, most homeowners might not even be sure of what they are.

How to Choose Soffits and Fascias

A soffit is what you’ll find beneath the rafter tails, while the fascias are what you see at the end of the rafters. Fascias are the more exposed part.

Like all other parts of your roofing system, soffits and fascias are very important, and they can also suffer damage over time. Rot, animal attacks, and other factors can lead your soffits and fascias to require repairs or replacement.

If you’re in the market for soffits and fascias to use for new construction or roof repair, here are the things to consider:

Material

There are different materials used to make fascias, but wood is the most popular. Wood is your best option if you have wood siding, but you can also choose it even if your home has brick, stone, or another type of siding. Redwood and cedar are the most preferred wood fascia materials, but you can also choose pine and fir.

There are fascias made of PVC, as well. They are often fashioned after the looks of wood. You can also choose fiber cement and composite.

As for soffits, PVC, vinyl, and aluminum are popular options. Many builders, however, use plywood. Since soffits are not exposed to the rain, plywood is a good and affordable choice.

Customization

Most homes can use regular soffits and fascias, but if your home has areas where the measurements and angles are less than usual, your roofer should be able to fashion the soffits and fascias your home needs.

Color

To choose the color that’s perfect for your home, it’s best to consider your siding and roof colors, which your soffit and fascias should complement. However, if you want your soffits and fascias to be neutral, you can simply choose white.
