Installing a Slate Roof Here Are 4 Things You Should Know

Slate roofing can last for a very long time, especially when properly installed and cared for. That said, you should ensure that you’re hiring a roofer who’s experienced in slate roof work in order to guarantee excellent installation quality.

Installing a Slate Roof Here Are 4 Things You Should Know

MHI Roofing, a roof and gutter installation specialist, lists four key things you should keep in mind before installing a slate roof.

Sheathing

Sheathing, sometimes called decking, is a wood material attached to the slate. It’s generally expected to last for up to 150 years as long as the right type of material is used. Different species of natural wood can offer good results, but others like plywood, laminated wood and particle wood are not recommended because they are typically made with glue.

Nails

Roofing contractors are very particular with the nails they use on slate roofs. Generally, the best options for slate roofing are stainless steel, copper, and hot-dipped galvanized steel nails. Electro-galvanized nails should be avoided because they can rust in a couple of years.

Underlayment

The most recommended underlayment material for slate roofing is the traditional 30-pound organic roofing felt. The underlayment is used to protect your home against storms that may occur prior to installation day. The slate itself already has the capacity for shedding water and protecting your home, so there’s really no need to add ice and water guards to your slate roof.

Sidelap and Headlap

The sidelap, which is the overlap on the sides, should be at least three inches. Meanwhile, the headlap, which is the overlap at the top, should also be at least three inches for steep roofs.
