Pros and Cons of Metal Roofing

MHI Roofing in Pittsburgh, PA

If it is time for you to think about replacing your roof, you may be wondering which roofing material is right for your home.  Should you choose Asphalt shingles? Slate Roofing? If you are interested in a less conventional option, another roofing material you could consider is metal. Metal roofing can be a wonderful option for any home, but it offers its own set of benefits and drawbacks that we will go over below!

Pros

  • Durability: Metal roofing offers more durability than just about any other roofing option. Metal roofs tend to last upwards of 50 years, compared to the typical 25 years that you might get out of your asphalt roof.
  • Fire Resistance: Metal roofing is non-flammable which means there are few better options if you are looking for a fire resistant roofing material. If you live in a arid climate, consider metal roofing to protect your home!
  • Wind Resistance: Metal roofs are also very resistant to wind.  If you live in an area with frequent hurricanes or tornadoes, metal roofing is arguably the best option.
  • Insulation: Metal roofing’s foam insulation retains heat in the winter, and keeps it out in the summer, making is a very energy efficient option for your home.
  • Environmentally Friendly: While Asphalt shingles are made from petroleum products, metal roofs are constructed from partially recycled materials, and are 100% recyclable themselves, meaning your carbon footprint is considerably lower if you choose a metal roof over an asphalt one.

Cons

  • Cost: Metal roofs are expensive.  They are considerably more expensive than asphalt options, running anywhere from $150 to $900 for a metal roof.  However, metal roofs help offset their expensive installation cost by lasting for a longer time than asphalt shingles.
  • Dents: While you can opt for the highest end options that prevent denting completely, most metal roofs will dent slightly if your home is faced with a hailstorm, falling tree limbs, or even if you need to perform some maintenance on your roof!
  • Noise: Metal roofs can also be quite noisy.  If you live in a particularly rainy climate, you may find that your metal roof makes a considerable amount of noise.  This can be mitigated by installing extra layers of insulation below your roof, but that is another cost you will have to consider when installing a metal roof.
