How Do Asphalt Shingle Cracking and Splitting Differ

Among the most common problems asphalt shingle roofs experience are cracking and splitting. Addressing these issues as soon as detected can help delay the need for a roofing replacement. Moreover, failing to deal with both of these issues can cause water damage to your roof’s sheathing.

Continue reading to learn the difference between asphalt shingle cracking and splitting.

What Causes Asphalt Shingle Cracking?

The asphalt mix used to create shingles contains volatiles or chemicals with a low boiling point. This component is what makes shingles flexible and waterproof. However, shingles gradually lose volatiles due to moisture, evaporation, and aging. Heat can speed up this process, causing shingles to crack on the surface. It is the reason keeping your shingles cool can extend their lifespan.

As shingles age, they will become more prone to craze cracking. The issue can also occur when there is excessive filler in the asphalt mix. However, if the problem develops just shortly after the roof installation, it could be that the mat is weak or the shingles are of poor quality. Ensure quality products and installation by hiring a reputable commercial roofing contractor for your project.

Why Does Asphalt Shingle Splitting Occur?

Shingles expand and contract due to extreme temperature changes, causing thermal splitting. The joints between the shingles reduce in size due to warm temperatures. On the other hand, shingles shrink and the joints between them enlarge when exposed to cold temperatures.

Constant changes in temperature can put a strain on the adhesive strips of the shingles, affecting their effectiveness. It is what causes shingles to split, which can then lead to leaks and reduced wind resistance. The issue can develop in a diagonal pattern or randomly throughout the roof.
