If you are building a house from scratch or are installing a brand new roof, there are many important decisions that will require your attention. In the case of your roof, the roofing experts you hired are sure to ask you whether or not you want to use trusses or rafters as the support system. But what exactly are trusses and rafters and what’s the difference between the two? Here’s a brief explanation.
Roof Rafters
Rafters are long planks, usually made of 2x10s or 2x12s, that slope down from the peak or central ridge of your roof, intersecting with the outside walls. These sloping outer beams provide support for the roofing itself as well as the sheathing.
Also known as stick framing, roof repair and installation experts will usually recommend that you go with rafters as a support structure since they are slightly less expensive than trusses. Trusses also provide more attic space and insulation which is always a plus.
Roof Trusses
Roof trusses, on the other hand, are prefabricated wooden structures that also integrate a triangular webbing of structural members to provide support for your roofing materials. While a bit more expensive, roof trusses are great since they come to the construction site already assembled and so are easier and quicker to install.
Most older homes will utilize rafters while new construction tends to lean towards trusses. While both have their own advantages and disadvantages, trusses are generally thought of to be the more durable and, therefore, the better choice between the two despite the higher up-front cost.
