5 Myths About Metal Roofing

A myth is a collective belief of society. It is something that just gets passed from one person to another, or one generation to another. Truth, however, is the way things are. One common myth is that bulls get angry when they see the color red. This seems to be demonstrated through the sport of bullfighting.  According to research, though, the bulls are attracted to the movement of the cape, vs the actual color.

There are a variety of myths surrounding metal roofing as well. Let’s take a look at some of the myths and bring out the actual truth.

MYTH #1: Lightning will strike metal roofs.

TRUTH:

Lightning will typically strike the highest object in the area, with a direct path to the ground. Because metal roofing is not grounded, lightning does not have an attraction to it. The likelihood of lightning hitting a metal roof is comparable to homes with other roofing materials. In fact, if lightning did happen to strike metal roofing, there is no chance of it catching fire, as opposed to other types of roofing materials. Metal is actually safer.

MYTH #2: Metal roofs are hot, and hold heat in the summer.

TRUTH:

Metal directly exposed to the hot Morgantown sun will heat up, however, so do other roofing materials. Metal roofing is now made to combat solar heat and UV rays. These are called “cool roofs”. They reflect the heat keeping the home at a comfortable temperature, and the need for excessive air conditioning use.  When the sun does go down, any heat in the roof is quickly dissipated. Metal roofing is actually quite an energy efficient. Secondly, the color of the roof does have an impact on heat. Lighter colors absorb less than darker colors.

MYTH #3: Metal roofing is expensive.

TRUTH:

True, metal roofing is more expensive than asphalt roofing. However, the type of metal roofing you choose does have a factor in the cost. Standing seam roofing material can cost more than corrugated metal. Ask the question of cost to your roofing contractor, and get all of the prices for your size home before making the final decision. Secondly, metal roofing can last almost twice as long as asphalt shingles. Therefore, a metal roof lasting nearly 40 years is a better bang for your buck than a roof that must be replaced after 25.

MYTH #4: Metal roofs dent easily.

TRUTH:

Metal roofing is quite durable and strong. They are made with a Class 4 Impact Resistant which is the greatest impact resistance a roof can have. Usually, dents do not occur unless the hail is over 2 inches in diameter, which is typically larger than a golf ball.

MYTH #5: Metal roofing can rust easily.

TRUTH:

Metal roofing is covered with a protective coating called galvalume substrate and a painted coating that fights against oxidation and rust formation. If rust does occur, it is typically after several decades. Most paint warranties are for over two decades against rusting.
